CHERRY VALLEY – Richard E. Nelson, 79, of Cherry Valley, died on Tuesday, January 2, 2024 at UMass Memorial – Memorial Campus.


He leaves his wife of 51 years, Gerry (Shackett) Nelson; a son, Richard R. Nelson of Rochdale; a sister-in-law, Maxine Nelson of Florida, four grandchildren, Alex Hubbard, who is stationed in the Army in Washington State, Anthony Hubbard of Cherry Valley, Michael Nelson of Cherry Valley, and Raylin Nelson of Clinton; 2 great-grandchildren, Reign and Aiko, many nieces and nephews and brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law.  His daughter, Sylvia Nelson, predeceased him in July 2023.  He is also predeceased by his two brothers, Robert A. and Kenneth E. Nelson.  He was born in Worcester, a son of the late George K. and Doris R. (Defosse) Nelson and had lived in Holden for many years before moving to Cherry Valley. He served in the U. S. Army during the Vietnam Era. 


Richard was a firefighter for the City of Worcester from 1972 to 2002, retiring as Captain.  He enjoyed fishing and camping and riding his motorcycle during his time in Florida.


Calling hours will be held at Rice Funeral Home, 300 Park Ave, Worcester on Saturday, January 20, 2024 from 1:00 to 2:30 pm, followed by a prayer service at 2:30 and Military Honors.  Burial will be private.  In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Worcester Fire Department.
