Phyllis Friedrich Obituary

HOLDEN - Phyllis M. Friedrich, 87, of Holden, died peacefully at home on Saturday, December 2, 2023, after a long illness.

She was predeceased by her husband of 17 years, Errol G. Friedrich, whom she married in November of 2003.  She was also predeceased in 1993 by her husband of 29 years, Edmund J. LaPlante. (According to Phyllis, they were the two most wonderful husbands imaginable).  She was the daughter of Roy S. Sanders, who lived with her from 1980 until his death in April of 2004, and Edythe P. Oliviera, who died in March of 2006.  In addition, she leaves her cousin Ronald Provost of Worcester, many close friends, including: Antoinette, Paula, Sheila, Gerri, Lisa, Mary, her God Daughter, Carol and her cat, Baby.

Phyllis was raised in Worcester and Boylston and began her early employment as an insurance secretary prior to entering the healthcare field.  She was a graduate of the nursing program of the former Fanning Trade School, earning her license as a practical nurse in 1970, and in 1978 graduated from Quinsigamond Community College with an associate in science degree.  She worked as a Registered Nurse for many years in long-term care facilities.  She continued her education at Assumption College, working toward a Bachelor of Arts in Liberal Studies program for registered nurses.  In 2000, she graduated from Northeastern University's Legal Nurse Consultant Program and obtained a Massachusetts Life Insurance Agent's License in 2007.

Phyllis loved teaching. She began a teaching career in the Worcester Vocational School system, instructing students in the areas of medical assisting and medical office administration.  She was employed as an instructor in various local Nurse Aide and Home Health Care programs, and in the 1990's taught medical assisting at Salter School.  In 2008, she was employed as an adjunct professor in the Business and Technology Department of Quinsigamond Community College, teaching medical language and medical transcription.  Until 2018, she was employed for ten years as an instructor for home health care employees at EPIC Health Services in Worcester.  After completing a training requirement in 2001, Phyllis became a part-time volunteer for Evercare Hospice and Palliative Care of Waltham, serving for one year.  She continued to volunteer and mentor students through 2019.

Phyllis treasured her many close friends, and always felt blessed that they shared so many wonderful years.  She assisted in developing the LINCOLN GROUP in 2006, and its twelve members included friends who first met as students at Lincoln Street Elementary School in 1942.  Monthly luncheon meetings were scheduled and proved to be a source of much joy and laughter.  Many lifetime friendships were also developed and appreciated during her teen years growing up in Boylston.  She was a member of Boylston Senior Citizens Society and the Holden Senior Center.  Many new friendships were established during her career years, and she continued to remain in contact with all into her senior years, thankful for sharing life's journey with so many wonderful people.  She could make friends in the checkout line while shopping.

Phyllis was also an accomplished seamstress and a self-taught pianist with a great love of all types of music, and she loved to laugh.  She delighted in the neighborhood children, hosting many craft activities. (If you knew Phyllis, you knew of her love of miniature creations).  Phyllis always expressed special appreciation for loving parents, Roy and Edythe, who provided a childhood full of love, discipline, encouragement, guidance and generosity; priceless gifts from the heart.

A special thanks is given to all those who assisted her in her years of declining health, and Dr. Gary Blanchard, her long-time primary care physician who she considered a friend.

At her request, there are no calling hours, and cremation will be handled by Rice Funeral Home, 300 Park Ave, Worcester.  Donations may be made to Bosler Humane Society, Box 12, Baldwinville, MA 01436 (boslerhs.org), or a charity of choice.
