WORCESTER - Paul L. Lajoie Sr., 82, of 24 Massasoit Road died yesterday in St. Vincent Hospital after a long illness.

He leaves his wife of 54 years, Anne I. (Boxshus) Lajoie; two sons, Paul L. Lajoie Jr. of Fort Myers, Fla., and Brian A. Lajoie of Millis; four grandchildren; nephews and nieces. He was born in Worcester, son of Joseph W. and Esmerelda (Bousquet) Lajoie, and lived here all his life. He graduated from the former Classical High School, where he was co-captain of the varsity football team.

Mr. Lajoie was a linetype machinist at the former Worcester Evening Post and the Worcester Telegram & Gazette. During World War II, he took a leave of absence from the T&G to become superintendent of the welding department at St. Pierre Mfg. Corp., which made special chains for the Navy. After the war, he returned to the Telegram & Gazette. He was then a linotype machinist for the Providence Journal for 19 years, retiring in 1976.

Mr. Lajoie was a member of Notre Dame-St. Joseph's Church and a former member of St. Joseph's Church. He was once manager and coach of the St. Pierre Mfg. Corp. baseball team.

The funeral will be held Tuesday from Rice Funeral Home, 300 Park Ave., with a Mass at 10 a.m. in Notre Dame-St. Joseph's Church, 5 Salem Square. Burial will be in Notre Dame Cemetery. Calling hours at the funeral home are 7 to 9 p.m. tomorrow. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Oncology Department, St. Vincent Hospital, 25 Winthrop St., Worcester, 01604.
