WHITINSVILLE – Mary Barbara (Strank) Tonry, 98, of Whitinsville, died Tuesday, August 15, 2023 at Notre Dame Long Term Care, Worcester.
Her husband of 67 years, Edmund A. Tonry, died in February 2020. She leaves three children, Mary Anne Douville and her husband Thomas Douville of Pascoag, RI, Michael Tonry and his wife Mary (Donatelli) Tonry of Whitinsville, and Paul Tonry and his wife Kathleen (Powell) Tonry of Uxbridge. She also leaves seven grandchildren, Kara (Douville) Kerrigan and her husband Justin of Auburn, Matthew Douville and his wife Caroline (Curry) of Hopkinton, Christopher Tonry and his fiancee Caitlin Parker of Seattle, WA, Sarah (Tonry) O’Connor and her husband Edward of Denver, CO, Maria (Tonry) Cherubino and her wife Grace of Westborough, Ryan Tonry and Keegan Tonry, both of Uxbridge; and five great-grandchildren: Thomas Douville, Gabrielle Douville and James Douville, all of Hopkinton; Grace Kerrigan and Ellie Kerrigan, both of Auburn. She was predeceased by a brother, Walter Strank. Mary was born in New York City, daughter of Joseph and Mary (Zifchak) Strank. Edmund, Mary and their family moved to the Whitinsville section of Northbridge in 1961.
Mary worked with her husband in the family business, Taylor Rental Center in Northbridge. She was involved in her church and community. She volunteered at the Whitinsville Senior Center and prepared taxes for the elderly. She taught CCD at St. Peter’s Church, was on the Bingo Committee and ran their annual Bazaar. She was a passionate bowler and along with Ed, bowled three times a week for many years. They were members of Ten Pin league bowling since 1966. Another passion she shared with Ed was travel. Together they visited 42 countries and most every U.S. state, when not at their summer cottage at Wallum Lake.
A Funeral Mass will be held at 11:00 am on Wednesday, August 23 at St. Peter’s Catholic Church, 39 Church Ave, Northbridge. Burial will be private. A calling hour will be held from 10:00 to 11:00 am at the church before the Mass. Arrangements are in the care of Rice Funeral Home, 300 Park Ave, Worcester and Turgeon Funeral Home, Northbridge.
