I grew up one house away from the Murphey home on Mount Hope Terrace. To me, he was larger than life, a free thinking, engaging, magical guy. He wasn't at all like the other adults I observed and got to know as I grew up. He made me feel that we had a connection that went beyond our shared name. He was a very, very special man. My condolences to Renee, Celia and Peter and the rest of your families. May you carry his gifts with you forever.

Mrs. Murphy. We have never met, but I was John,s physician for several years. It was always a pleasure to see him and talk about art or anything else. He even gave me one of his small paintings which has hung in my home ever since. My sympathies to you and his family. Edmond M. Koury, MD

My heart is filled with sadness upon hearing of John's passing. John was a man of joy, curiosity, wit, intelligence, kindness, and such great talent in so many areas. It was an honor for me to have had him as a teacher and a dear, dear friend. Even though I had not seen him for many years, John always remained a presence in my life via his artwork that still hangs in my home and the fond memories of time spent in deep conversation with him in various locales.
The world was brighter place while John was in it. My deepest condolences to all of his loved ones.

Those of us who were lucky enough to be classmates of John will never forget him. His talents in music and art were awesome - altho he was casual and modest - almost to a fault - about them.
