WORCESTER - Elwin F. “Sonny” Gibson Jr, 82, passed away peacefully at home, surrounded by his family on Sunday, September 13, 2020.
He is survived by his loving wife Dorothy, children Elwin F Gibson III and his wife Patricia, Glenn P. Gibson and his wife Kathleen, Diane Jordan and her husband Bill, and Denise Gabriele; grandchildren Jennifer Bates, Sarah Gibson, Melissa Donovan, Amanda Gibson, Glenn Gibson Jr, Kevin Jordan, and Dani Jordan; great-grandchildren Asher Bates, Gibson Bates, and Jayden Jordan.
He was the longtime owner of Gibson’s Dairy in Worcester and in later years moved to Maine where he loved running North Camps for the last 50 years until his retirement. He was an avid outdoorsman, fisherman, hunter and guide for many years in Rangeley Maine. He was a member of the Rangeley Region Guides and Sportsman Alliance and Snowmobilers Alliance of Maine. He was a member of the Leicester Rod & Gun Club, the Worcester Lodge of Elks, the Auburn Maine Elks, where he received his 50-year life membership, the Mass State Grange, Central Community Grange, Worcester Central Pomona, the Eagles in Worcester and Rumford Maine.
Sonny was a dedicated Mason, joining Athelston Lodge of Masons in Worcester, the Guiding Lights Lodge of Masons in Auburn, MA, and was very active in Kemankeag Lodge of Masons in Rangeley, ME. Sonny was a member of the Kora Shrine in Lewiston, Maine and the Western Mountain Shrine Club where he was very active in Shrine parades, cookouts, dinners and functions, all for the purpose of raising funds for the Shrine Children’s Hospitals. Sonny and Dottie were dedicated workers for many years at the Shrine Circuses in Maine and enjoyed participating in Shrine activities.
He was an avid biker and member of United Bikers of Maine, and the Mountain Chapter of the Masonic Widows Sons Biker Group. He participated in the annual toy drives sponsored by the United Bikers of Maine, gathering toys for the Salvation Army. Sonny was a 32nd degree member of the Scottish Rite where he received his 50 year pin in 2019. He loved being with family and friends and enjoyed that above all else. He will be greatly missed by all.
Calling hours are Monday, September 21, 2020 from 4:00 – 6:30 pm at Rice Funeral Home, 300 Park Ave, followed by a service at 6:30 pm at the funeral home. Burial will be private. In lieu of flowers donations in his name would be greatly appreciated at lovetotherescue.org/.
