WORCESTER - Peter R. Smith, 75, of Worcester passed away peacefully on Sunday, December 30, 2018 at Beth Israel Deaconess Hospital, Boston, surrounded by his loving family.
Peter was born on February 5, 1943 in Worcester to his parents, Andrew “Papa” Smith and Vera “Nana” (Noak) Smith. Peter was a graduate of North High School in Worcester. He worked for the Worcester Telegram and Gazette for five years. Shortly after, he proudly served his country for 17 years in the U.S. Army. After leaving the military he worked at Spag’s Schoolhouse where he was known as “Big Pete”.
Peter was a devoted father and husband. He is survived by his wife of 34 years, Sylvia, his sons Robert of Bristol, CT, James and his fiancée Julie of Worcester, Michael and his wife Tinamarie of Worcester, Shawn and his wife Gina of Marlborough, Phillip and his wife Amanda of Worcester, Mathew of Worcester; and his daughter Catherine of Worcester. He leaves 4 grandchildren. Valerie, Rebekah, Kaydin, and Aubrey, his only sibling, Marcia Sheppard of Camden NJ, and niece and nephew, Rusty and Lori of NJ.
Peter enjoyed spending time with his family. For many years he was involved heavily in Boy Scouts of America where he and his children were members of Troop 50. Peter’s real passion was his love for trains. He enjoyed waking up early and watching the trains come in and out the station. He was a part of the Worcester Model Railroaders for many years.
Calling hours will be on Saturday, January 12, 2019 from 12:00 noon - 3:00 pm at Rice Funeral Home, 300 Park Ave, with a prayer service at 2:00 pm. A celebration of life will follow at 4:00 pm at the Tatnuck American Legion Post 288, 570 Mill Street, Worcester. All are welcome to attend and celebrate Peter’s life.
