WORCESTER – Gerald J. “Gerry” Hamel, 62, of Worcester, died Monday, January 18, 2016 at Rose Monahan Hospice, with his wife Donna by his side, after a battle with cancer.
He leaves his wife of 15 years, Donna L. (Stewart) Hamel; a son, Joseph A. Hamel and his wife Dena of Worcester; a daughter, Julie Hamel of Whitinsville; his mother Marie-Rose M. Hamel of Worcester; two brothers, Alfred J. Hamel and his wife Rebecca of Barre, and Philip L. Hamel and his wife Diane of Princeton; two sisters, Patricia M. Hamel of Barre and Claire A. Frontil and her husband Jean of Bretigny-sur-Orge, France; two grandchildren, Genevieve and Natalie of Worcester; many nieces and nephews. He was born in Worcester, son of Joseph A. and Marie-Rose M. (Ferrand) Hamel. He graduated Doherty Memorial High in 1971.
Gerry was a U.S. Navy veteran, serving from 1971-1973 as a 3rd class petty officer and another 3 years in the Naval Reserve. He served on the USS Caloosahatchee. Gerry was very proud of his French Heritage. He spent his whole life in Worcester and loved this city. He was the manager of a Midas Muffler Shop and later at Bancroft Tire. He also worked as fleet manager for the Worcester Police Department. Gerry was a member of Tatnuck American Legion Post and attended Quinsagamond Community College. He loved fishing, the Red Sox, Patriots and was an avid bird watcher.

Calling hours will be Thursday January 21, 2016 from 4:00 – 7:00 pm at Rice Funeral Home, 300 Park Ave, Worcester. Burial with full military honors will be at 10:15 on Friday, Jan. 22 at Bourne National Cemetery, Bourne, MA.
