READING, MA – Denise R. (Varin) Hast, 64, of New York City, NY, passed away peacefully on Monday, September 5, 2016 at the Sawtelle Family Hospice House, Reading after a battle with Leukemia. 

She leaves two sons, Matthew Hast of Somerville and Timothy Hast of Webster and four grandchildren, Aidan, Charlotte, Cameron, and Rhiannon, all of Webster.  She also leaves her former husband, George Hast of Council Bluffs, IA; and sisters-in-law, Linda Bienvenu of Gardner, MA, Nancy Beaudry of Tobyhana, PA, Karen Loomis of Leominster, MA and Cindy McCumber of Webster, MA. She was born in Worcester, daughter of Jean-Nil and Blanche Varin.  Her second mother, Cécile (Boucher) Varin, died in 2007.  She lived in Worcester for many years and also lived in New York City until recently.   She graduated from St. Ann's Academy in Marlborough, MA and Quinsigamond Community College with an Associate's Degree in Accounting.

Denise worked as a clubhouse administrator for Clubhouse International (ICCD) in New York City for ten years.  She was a member & volunteer of Genesis Club of Worcester and the Fountain House of New York City.  She enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren in Massachusetts, traveling & spending time with family in Quebec, Canada along the banks of the St. Lawrence River.  She also enjoyed visiting art museums, especially the Worcester Art Museum, and eating fried clams and steamers at Woodman's of Essex.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, September 24 at 4:30 PM at St. John’s Episcopal Church, 27 Devens St., Charlestown, MA 02129.  Burial will be private.   Rice Funeral Home, 300 Park, Worcester, is in care of arrangements. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Denise’s memory to the Genesis Club of Worcester, 274 Lincoln St, Worcester, MA 01605 (http://www.genesisclub.org/donate.html).
