WORCESTER - Katherine C. "Kay" Akona, age 87, died peacefully on April 20, 2013 at Tatnuck Park in Worcester, MA.
She was born on Sept. 16, 1925, in Worcester, MA. , daughter of the late Francis and Isabel Conlon. Kay attended local elementary schools, and graduated from Commerce High School, Class of 1943. Kay spent the majority of her adult years in Honolulu, Hawaii, where she met her husband, Nip Tong Akona. They were married for 49 years before his passing on Oct. 15, 2006. Kay worked at a number of interesting positions during her career, including serving as the First Assistant to the Director of Operations for Pan American Airlines in Honolulu. She was an avid skier and surfer, and with her husband Nip traveled worldwide. She returned to her roots in 2011 and resided at Tatnuck Park in Worcester.
Kay is survived by her brothers, Robert E. Conlon, her twin, and his wife Justine of Worcester, MA and John T. Conlon and his wife Faith of Amherst, MA. She also leaves many beloved nephews and nieces. The family would especially like to thank the wonderful staff at Tatnuck Park for their loving care and friendship to Kay. They also wish to thank Evercare Hospice for the compassion and support they gave to Kay and her family before her last flight to join her beloved husband, Nip.
Funeral services and burial will be private. Rice Funeral Home, 300 Park Ave, is in care of arrangements.
